Cloaked Link Detection

Cloaked Links are Links which are manipulated by JavaScript to appear different to a Search Engine. The SEO Engine™, like other advanced Search Engines, can easily detect JavaScript changes. Too many cloaked Links can result in severe penalties for a Webpage, as this is a commonly used tactic to hide Links from Search Engines.

Because of the ability of the SEO Engine™ Search Engine to execute JavaScript, it can easily detect which Links are present with and without JavaScript. Below is an small example of the types of cloaked links:

  • The 'onclick' attribute fires JavaScript code which changes the 'href' attribute of the Link
  • The 'href' attribute contains JavaScript code which obfuscates the URL
  • The Webpage has JavaScript code somewhere (on-page or externally linked) which alters the 'href' attribute of a Link
  • The 'onclick' attribute fires JavaScript code which changes the 'document.location' DOM element

These are but a small set of examples which SEO Engine™ can execute and detect.

A Listing of Cloaked Links can be viewed on both the Website and Webpage level, just like any other type of Link in SEO Engine™. Additionally, Cloaked Links can be used as a Quick Filter on the Link Listing Screens. Because the SEO Engine™ Search Engine sees Cloaked Links just fine (they aren't "cloaked" to SEO Engine™), no changes to the Link Scorecards are made.
